Continuing Professional Development

CPD may be defined as learning activities, which update existing skills.  It is a requirement of the new consultant contract.

There is no longer a need to collect CPD points.  Instead the Senate of Surgery encourages all doctors to collect and record their CPD activity in such a way that it forms part of the appraisal system.  A reflective approach is encouraged.  Full details including the relevant forms are available in the senate document Maintaining your performance.

Appraisal

CPD activity may be recorded in the electronic logbook, by using the NHS appraisal toolkit or using the paper forms in Maintaining your performance
